Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries
(Young-Hae Chang and Marc Voge)::::
live and and work in Seoul, Korea
This Seoul-based duo has been a remarkable presence in the new global art form—web art. Insisting on but re-sorting the primary nature of the internet communication via texts and languages, they have produced an impressive body of work using basic Flash programming and monaco fonts, to be broadcast on the web. A kind of diary narrative and travelogue accompanied by beautiful and emotional music, the result is brilliantly poetical and attractive, showing the maximum efficiency of expression and communication through an ultimate simplicity and a minimalist aesthetics. However, their beauty and poetry are by no means an art-for-art’s-sake business. Instead, they are always socially and politically engaged and engaging. Recounting some of the most radical, often absurd experiences and reflections on different kinds of social and private events, always with a sense of humor, the artists manage to engage the audience in critical reflections on the most urgent issues of our time, from geopolitical tension to immigration, from capitalist exploitation to political manipulation, from technology to production. Ultimately, using the special mode of production and communication made possible by the internet, they have opened an infinite space, both in the virtual world and the real, for artistic invention—and have in fact succeeded in creating a new form of expression, perfectly blending technology, visual art, music, and literature, as well as social sciences.
