EXHIBITION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS ::::
A New Model

The new Exhibition and Public Programs department at SFAI forms a dynamic and complex structure with five parallel sections (click heading to expand):

Global Figures (click to expand)
presents monographic exhibitions featuring major artists or artists working in collectives from different cultures who have gained important influence on the current global art scene and ought to have increased recognition in the US.

New Models of Culture and Art Production (click to expand)
manifests new modes of production, both in terms of artistic creation and in terms of economic, industrial and technical productions in real life, in the process of globalization. New Models will reflect the making of different modernities, and the tension between developed and “under-developed” worlds.

Pacific Perspectives (click to expand)
examines the dynamic scene of creation across the Pacific Rim ranging from the Americas to Asia bringing new attention to the locality of San Francisco and its unique geographic and cultural position, an inspiring case of global-local negotiation. This section covers the largest transdisciplinary collaborations.

Acting Out in the City (click to expand)
(from Prototype to Realization) - will use a part of the SFAI gallery space as a laboratory for larger scale projects of interventions in the city to claim a more intense relationship between artistic productions and public spaces.

New Voices (click to expand)
encourages self-organizational initiatives by younger curators and other activists by providing them spaces and strategies to present their projects.

This exciting new structure for exhibitions and public programs—emphasizing the institution as a site of production rather than simple representation—looks beyond the traditional histories and narratives of exhibition practice while providing access to artists for the students in the shape of residencies, studio visits, workshops, and off campus community projects that examine the notions of public and private domains.
